According to South Korean media "Business Korea", Samsung recently poached a semiconductor expert Kim Woo-pyeong from Apple to strengthen packaging technology.

According to the data, Kim Woo-pyeong graduated from KAIST, worked for Texas Instruments (TI) and Qualcomm, and worked for Apple for about 9 years since 2014.

As the miniaturization of circuits in front-end processes has reached its limit, "3D packaging" or "chiplet" technology is attracting investment. Now, advanced packaging has become the main battlefield of leading chip companies. Global semiconductor giants such as Intel and TSMC are investing heavily, and Samsung Electronics is no exception.

In 2020, Samsung officially launched the 3D stacking technology "X-Cube", focusing on applications such as high-performance computing processors, 5G networking data chips, and AI computing chips. Samsung DS division also revealed at the Hot Chips held in June last year that it is developing 3.5D advanced packaging technology.

In June of this year, in order to further strengthen cooperation with large foundry customers in the packaging field, Samsung Electronics DS Division officially established a Semiconductor Packaging Task Force (TF), which is directly led by DS Division CEO Kyung Kye-hyun.

A few days ago, it was reported that Samsung Electronics has begun to consider increasing investment in the semiconductor packaging business and is evaluating an investment plan that may expand production at its Cheonan plant in South Korea. The report pointed out that Samsung Electronics' semiconductor packaging capacity is mainly located in Wenyang and Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. It also has a semiconductor packaging factory and R&D center in Suzhou. At present, Samsung may be renting the space of the Samsung Display Tianan factory, a subsidiary of the group, to expand production.

In fact, in order to expand global competitiveness, Samsung Electronics' semiconductor division is actively expanding recruitment, aiming to secure more than 70,000 employees within this year. The number of employees in Samsung Electronics' semiconductor division exceeded 63,000 at the end of last year and is expected to reach 67,000 in the first half of this year.

According to South Korean media reports, Samsung Electronics is discussing a plan to expand the number of employees to 70,000 by the end of this year. In order to secure core talents in the semiconductor field, Samsung Electronics is formulating mid-to-long-term measures, and is also discussing with Korean universities about hiring former and current Samsung Electronics leaders before and after retirement to serve as special-term professors.
